I wanted to write a book that included a lot of funny things that either happened when I was a child growing up on a small farm, or were anecdotes related to me by my father. One of the neighbouring farms had been bought by a man who wanted to run a hippy colony, people this with inhabutants as inept as those in Cold Comfort Farm (by Stella Gibbons), a heroine seeking solace and spirital nourishment and Nirvana sprang into being. I laughed a lot while writing this and it remains one of my favourite books.
